How to Have Your Coins Graded

We Can Assist With the Grading Process

At Safe Haven Exchange, we help collectors and sellers navigate the coin grading process with ease. Each year, we send thousands of coins to leading grading services, which allows us to secure better rates and faster turnaround times than most individual submitters. With decades of experience, our team knows when grading makes sense, which service is the best fit, and how to maximize the results.

We never charge for our time or expertise—only the discounted grading fees charged by the services themselves.

Why People Get Coins Graded

Coin grading is essential because value depends heavily on rarity and condition. The same coin can vary dramatically in price depending on its grade. Before grading services existed, buyers had to trust dealers’ opinions—often at a loss.

Today, leading independent companies like NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) and PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) provide unbiased, standardized grading. Together, they’ve graded nearly 70 million coins over the past 30+ years, giving collectors confidence in what they’re buying or selling.

Not Every Coin Is Worth Grading

The most common question we hear is: “Should I get my coin graded?”
The answer depends on whether grading fees are justified by the coin’s potential increase in value.

Example: A 1921 $1 Morgan Silver Dollar sells for about $30 ungraded. Graded, its value ranges from $35 (MS60–MS62) up to $10,000 (MS67). However, grading costs at least $20, so unless it grades MS65 or higher, the return may not outweigh the expense.

Our experts can help you decide if grading is the right move for your coin.

How Much Does Grading Cost?

Submitting coins directly to PCGS or NGC requires:

  • Membership fees: Starting at $39–$69 annually.
  • Grading fees: $20 for common coins up to $125+ for high-value coins.
  • Shipping & insurance: Costs vary, and turnaround may take several weeks.

For high-value coins (over $5,000), grading is usually worthwhile. For lower-value coins, it may not be.

How to Send Coins for Grading

If you’d like to submit coins on your own, the steps are:

  1. Join the grading company’s submission club.
  2. Complete required paperwork with coin details and insurance values.
  3. Package coins securely per the grader’s instructions.
  4. Pay grading fees (credit card or check).
  5. Ship coins with insurance to the grading company.
  6. Wait a few weeks for grading and return shipment.

When returned, your coins will be sealed in a protective holder, displaying their certified grade.

Important to Know

Grading doesn’t automatically make a coin more valuable. Instead, it provides trust and transparency between buyers and sellers. For many coins, grading makes them easier to sell at a fair market price, while extremely high grades can significantly increase value.

At Safe Haven Exchange, we’re here to guide you through the process—helping you protect your investment and make the smartest decision for your collection.
