Greece, Island of Aegina. AR Stater, 12.12g, struck c. 525–480 BC. Obverse: sea turtle with a row of dots down the shell. Reverse: large incuse square divided into multiple compartments (the “Union Jack” punch). The Aegina turtle is among the earliest coinages of the Western world and the first true international trade coin — “turtles” circulated across the Greek world before Athens’ owls.
