Kingdom of Lydia, Croesus. AR Stater, 10.50g, struck c. 561–546 BC at Sardis. Obverse: confronted foreparts of a lion and a bull. Reverse: two incuse square punches (bipartite incuse). This is the coinage of Croesus — the Lydian king whose name became a byword for wealth (“rich as Croesus”) and who introduced the world’s first bimetallic currency, the first coins struck in pure gold and pure silver. Graded NGC Ancients Ch VF, Strike 4/5, Surface 2/5. NGC cert 4244495-012.
